“The American Revolution and the Episcopal Church” -- A presentation by Geoff Hurd

Since its establishment by Parliament and King Henry VIII in the 16th Century, the Church of England (or the Anglican Church) had been intertwined with the British government. As new colonies were added to the British Empire in North America, the Anglican Church followed. The church often even provided some governmental functions in the American colonies. When those colonies secured their independence following a long war, the fate of the Anglican Church, now diminished in size and influence, was precarious.

As we approach the 250th anniversary of the drafting and signing of the Declaration of Independence, join Geoff Hurd at Calvary Episcopal Church to learn how the church was reimagined to exist today as the Episcopal Church.

Geoff Hurd is retired and is now pursuing interests in history and writing. He is a lifetime Episcopalian. He and his wife live in the South Hills and both are members of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Light refreshments will be served.  This event is being co-sponsored by The English Nationality Room at the University of Pittsburgh, Britsburgh, and Calvary Episcopal Church
